Water: A Key Component For Performing Your Best

While I typically emphasize how important physical activity is to the body, I don’t want to neglect how vital water is, too. Because the human body is made up of about 60% water, we need to utilize that water to do almost anything. Breakingmuscle.com’s article 10 Life-Changing Reasons to Drink More Water does a great job of showing that effects that being dehydrated has on the body. Additionally, at the end of the article they provide rules of thumb when it comes to our daily intake of water. Check it out!

GO RED FOR WOMEN

“What are our reasons for staying healthy? Life is why. Our families is why.”

It is important for ALL women, not only Latinos to approach our eating habits and exercise the same way we would want kids to. It is our responsibility to encourage those around us to take-on a healthy lifestyle by being a good role model ourselves. I love that this video emphasizes the importance of both healthy eating and finding time for 30 minutes of daily physical activity a day, not just one.

The Wii-Still Going Strong in 2015

If you haven’t heard about Nintendo’s Wii in the past couple years…where have you been? On a more serious note, an excerpt from humankintetics .com emphasizes the use of technology to engage individuals to change exercise behavior in the article “Using technology to promote physical activity.” The games Wii Sport, Wii Fit, and even Dance Dance Revolution all increase energy expenditure and may produce positive health benefits. These are all very interactive games that can help you train in different ways including aerobic, strength, and balance. There are many benefits of using The Wii and these include:

  • No skills or training is required
  • Ability to play alone or with others
  • Alternative to bad weather
  • Majority of games are not age specific

Exploring Emotional Barriers

The University of Alabama at Birmingham released an article in January discussing one of their newest  studies that focus on examining the underlying issues that may cause individuals not to exercise. The participants for this research include all women ages 25-44 with a body mass index of 25-29.9 kg/mand all participants will be asked to commit to a regimen of walking three times weekly for 12 weeks , but one group will receive positive psychotherapy sessions. Because the study is still underway, clearly there are no results yet but hopefully this study will be one of many to come to explore the role emotions have on exercise.

I will be staying updated with this study and will post further on their findings once they are released.  If you want to check out the article, the link to that is here.
